One of the patients’ most common questions about Botox® is when they should start getting treatments. No maximum age limit exists for patients who want to look and feel their best. And for many people, Botox® is the most affordable and easiest place to start in terms of anti-aging treatments.
If you are trying to decide if now is the right time to start getting Botox®, Bloom MedSpa would like to share some important facts. As long as you are eighteen (18) years old, Botox® is an aesthetic option for patients in good health.
Patients who are over the age of fifty (50) years have many of the same concerns. But Botox® remains a safe and effective treatment for various wellness and aesthetic goals. When administered by a certified clinician as part of a professional treatment plan.
Will My Skin Look Worse If I Stop Getting Botox®?
Some anti-aging procedures require ongoing treatments. And if you decide to stop getting fillers in strategic areas of your face, you will start to see a difference and a reversal of the results you achieved after eighteen (18) months.
But the same thing is not true about Botox®. The volume that is created by stimulating facial muscles is long-lasting. After you stop getting Botox®, the positive effects remain compared to how your skin would have looked without any treatments.
One study of twins revealed that Botox® could have a positive lasting effect. But the clinical data also suggested that regular Botox® use could dramatically slow the development of deep wrinkles and creases on the face.
When Botox is injected, it blocks nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions in your face. That helps smooth wrinkles for many months and slows the development of new wrinkles or deeper creases.
Contact our botox clinic if you start noticing changes you are not happy with after you stop getting treatments. After an updated consultation, our clinicians can create a new treatment plan for you.
Can I Get Botox® If I Have Dentures?
If you have full or partial dentures, you may have noticed changes to how your face looks. Both when you have your dentures and when you remove them at night. Natural teeth make a face look fuller, and when you have dentures, the muscle volume around your mouth can change and alter your appearance unflatteringly.
Did you know that some dentists are offering Botox® specifically to address volume loss around the cheeks, chin, and mouth? Having dentures does not mean that you cannot get Botox®. Botox® injections strategically placed can help stimulate the muscles around the cheek, mouth, and chin to restore the appearance of fullness in your lower face.
Patients with dentures can sometimes experience muscle pain as the jaw adjusts to the new structure. Botox® may also help reduce muscle soreness for patients who wear dentures by reducing muscle contractions in the face.
How Many Botox® Treatments and Units Will I Need?
The number of units and treatment sessions for Botox® depends on a number of factors. During your free consultation at Bloom MedSpa, our clinicians will evaluate the number and depth of lines on your face. And discuss a treatment plan, including an estimate on how many units will be required to achieve facial smoothing and reduced lines.
A patient aged fifty or older may have deep creases and lines in common areas like between the eyebrows (called the “elevens”) or around the mouth (frown lines) and corners of the eye (crow’s feet). The deeper the lines, the more Botox® treatments will be needed.
Every individual treatment plan differs. Some patients want to gently lighten the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Where some lines are still visible but not as noticeable, other patients may want a more dramatic change and course of treatment to attempt to resolve more pronounced wrinkles.
To improve wrinkles and lines around the eyes, Allergan (the manufacturer of Botox®) suggests injecting five areas along the upper brow area, and between the eyebrows, in a “V” shaped pattern. The center point of the “V” pattern will be located between the eyebrows but can be modified depending on the patient.
Your Bloom MedSpa clinician will note your natural facial movements to determine where the injections should be applied. The average patient receives five Botox units of Botox® per injection site, for a total of twenty-five (25) units to achieve results. However, additional units may be required.
How Often Will I Have to Return for Botox® Treatments?
After completing your first treatments and achieving the desired results, your clinician will schedule a follow-up appointment after approximately four months. That is to analyze the results and determine how often you should return.
There is no fast rule about how often every patient should return for Botox® treatments. It depends on the condition of your skin and the number and depth of wrinkles and creases. But on average, most patients return every 4-6 months to maintain results.
Can I Move My Face Following a Botox® Treatment?
For the first twenty-four hours, there are some important aftercare steps patients need to take to ensure that the Botox® has time to set in the facial muscles. For at least three hours following your treatment, you should avoid exercising, lying down, washing, or putting pressure on your face.
Do not massage or rub the treated areas. Exercise and pressure on your treatment area can cause the Botox® to migrate or move outside the target area. While that doesn’t present a health risk for patients, it can reduce positive results in the key areas you want to address.
Our clinical team at Bloom MedSpa will provide you with a pre-treatment and post-treatment guide to help you remember the “Do’s and Don’ts” so that you will be satisfied with the results of your Botox® treatment.
How Long Does It Take to See Botox® Results?
In three days, you should start to see a difference. One of the reasons our team at Bloom MedSpa takes before and after pictures is to help patients track the changes and appearance of lines and wrinkles. The results are exciting and noticeable.
Approximately two weeks after your Botox treatments are completed, you will see the full effect. That is generally when you want to document (take pictures) your face. And contact our team at Bloom MedSpa if you feel you would like to address other areas of your face or increase treatments in different targeted zones.
Is Botox® Also Effective for Men Over Fifty?
Men want to look good and feel great about their appearance too. While the majority of Botox® treatments are administered to women, the number of men exploring anti-aging treatments is increasing.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), almost 300,000 men in the United States undergo Botox® cosmetic procedures yearly. In 2019, 473,354 men engaged in the popular aesthetic treatment. And Botox® remains the most popular cosmetic procedure requested by men in America.
They have even given it a special name; “Brotox.” And the only difference between treatments for men and women with Botox® is the number of units required. As men tend to have thicker skin and stronger muscles, treatments need higher doses of Botox to address lines and wrinkles.
The principles of Botox are the same for men and women, but due to thicker and stronger muscles, men often require more units than women. However, even with the higher doses, they do not come anywhere close to the toxicity threshold.
